The alternator charges the house battery while you drive; solar charges it while you are parked. A dual-input DC-DC charger takes both into one box, one set of cables and one charging profile. Here is how it works and when a separate solar controller is the better answer.
Two sources, one battery
A house battery in a 4×4 or camper has two natural sources of energy. On the road, the alternator has plenty to spare. At camp, a panel on the roof or on the ground has the whole day. The problem with running them separately is that two chargers each decide on their own what the battery needs, and the battery ends up with two opinions about its voltage.
A dual-input DC-DC charger such as the KISAE Abso DMT12100 solves this by taking the alternator on one input and the solar array on the other. It charges from both when driving in daylight, from solar alone when parked, and always with one multi-stage AGM or lithium profile and one temperature sensor. One set of battery cables, one fuse, one thing to understand.
What MPPT does for you
A solar panel has a sweet spot, a voltage at which it gives its maximum power, and that spot moves with sunshine and temperature. An MPPT (maximum power point tracking) input hunts for that spot continuously and converts the panel’s higher voltage down to charging voltage without wasting the difference. Compared with a simple PWM controller, it gets noticeably more energy out of the same panel in the morning, in cloud and when the panel is hot, which in Thailand is most of the day.
How much solar is worth fitting
Thailand gives roughly four to five hours of full-strength sun a day across the year, more in the dry season, less in the monsoon. As a rule of thumb for planning, a 100 W panel lying flat on a roof returns about 25–30 Ah a day into a 12 V battery once wiring and charging losses are counted. A fridge, lights and phones use about 40 Ah a day, so 200 W keeps a weekend camp level without starting the engine, and 300 W gives you a margin for cloud.
Panels fitted flat on a roof lose a little to angle but gain by always being deployed; a portable panel you can turn towards the sun does better per watt but has to be set out and packed away. Many owners fit both.
When a separate controller is better
- The charger is far from the panel. If the DC-DC charger sits by the house battery in the canopy and the panel is on a trailer or set out on the ground, a small KISAE solar charge controller at the panel end can be simpler to wire.
- A 24 V system or a larger array than the dual-input charger is rated for.
- Adding solar to an existing DC-DC charger that has no solar input. A separate controller charges the same battery in parallel; set both to the same AGM profile and they get along.
Wiring it safely
Fuse the cable from the panel near the battery as well as the cable from the starting battery, keep the DC-DC charger within a short run of the house battery, and size cable for the charger’s full output current. Each KISAE charger page carries the manufacturer’s cable and fuse table for its current. The temperature sensor goes on the battery terminal, not on the charger, so the charger reads the battery’s real temperature in a hot canopy.
